Glenrock, WY, once called Deer Creek Station, began as a small mail and stage station on the Oregon Trail and served as a vital supply station for emigrants traveling westward. More than 350,000 pioneers passed through the valley where Glenrock is located and stopped at the "Rock in the Glen" west of town, giving the town its present name. The discovery of gas and oil in 1912 contributed to the area's economy. Coal mining activity during the early 1900s was important to the county's economic history. In 1958 the Dave Johnston Power Plant, one of the Rocky Mountain region's largest coal-fired steam-electric generating stations, was constructed and helped diversify and stabilize the economy of the area.
